Shards
Shards are important items in 
Crafting, and they are used to pay for entry to the Sacred Nebula and Energy Belt areas.
Unlocking and Obtaining
Basic shards are unlocked in the 
Ancient Shop. After that they can be acquired through:
Alchemy — 5 dark essence to unlock, then 50 dark essence, 100k (1e5) beer and cheese to craft 3 shards
Milestones for 
Pyramid- Shardifying (AKA Converting)
Artifacts. - Dropped from Bosses
Ascension, 
Fusion and 
Transformation shards are unlocked in the 
Hematite Shop. You gain 30 of each on purchase. After that they can be obtained through:
- Alchemy
- Dropped from Bosses in Energy Belt
Maximum Shards
Basic shards start with a limit of ten (10) shards per basic leaf. However, this limit can be extended to twenty three (23) through Milestones and Leaf Shop Upgrades:
- +2 shards for beating
The Leaf Tower Floor 200,000 - +2 shards for beating Pyramid Floor 150
- +3 shards in the Hematite Shop
- +3 shards in the
Plasma Shop - +3 shards for killing 100 enemies in Floor 4 of
The Leafton Pit.
Note that the maximum number of shards that can be applied to an attribute remains ten; however, the additional shards can be applied to other attributes instead.
Usage
Basic Shards
Shards are used to boost one crafted leaf base stat by +300%. Applying a boost to a leaf costs 1 shard for a random stat or 10 for a chosen stat (10 basic, can be lowered to 7 with Ancient Leaves shop upgrade) for an ancient leaf. Resulting multiplier will be where n is amount of shard boosts. All spent shards will be returned once the leaf they are applied to is salvaged or its stats are re-rolled. Shard boosts on a leaf can be re-rolled.

Special Shards
Ascension shards are used to ascend sacred leaves and beyond (like how ancient leaves are used to ascend ancient leaves and below).
Fusion shards are used to fuse ancient leaves and higher.
Transformation shards are used to transform a property of an ancient leaf and higher.
Card Parts are brewed from Fusion shards and Transformation shards.
